christy frank as a child

Sometimes your calling is there all along…

I’ve loved people and conservation since I was a little kid. I formed a neighborhood club as a child, and I would lead projects to “Save the Earth.” Here I am at 9 years old, (on the right in the fuzzy bear shirt!) before the days of curb-side recycling and back when we all had phone books. I organized a group to go door to door and collect the prior years’ books to recycle them.

I also wrote stories and had a camera in hand since I was five years old. My first “book” was a story about a fox. I vividly remember stapling the pages together with gusto. I guess I should have known all along this is what I’d end up pursuing.

These days, I am driven to share conservation and documentary storytelling. I strongly believe environmental justice connects us all; people, wildlife, plants, and our beautiful planet. I hope to share stories that inspire everyone to reach out and protect our planet, and each other.

My Full Artist’s Statement:
Sometimes, the winding thread that binds us all goes overlooked, unnoticed, or appears severed. Yet, when peering more closely, we realize it has been there all along, tying one human to another. This thread binds one bird to an ecosystem, that ecosystem to the survival of a pollinator, and that pollinator to the survival of humanity, and so on. Seemingly inconsequential actions can wrench life so forcefully on the other side of the world that they cease to exist, being linked to that chain. I feel and see that thread in stories. I bear witness to the push and the pull and attempt to reveal these connections as a catalyst for change. People and nature are not two separate entities. We are part of the natural world. My hope is that by exposing the intersections of this thread and amplifying the voices, energy, and moments by bringing visual truth to power, others will feel what I experience. Through that raw and compelling emotion, we will be motivated to save each other and the wild surrounding us.
